Lincoln’s Funeral Train: A Nation Mourns
A presentation by Richard Harris

After Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on April 14th, 1865 and various ceremonies at D.C., his funeral train left Washington on April 21st. Between then and its May 4th arrival in Springfield, Illinois, an estimated 6,000,000 citizens viewed the casket or the passing train. Lincoln’s body was displayed in various state capitols, including Indianapolis. This outpouring of grief and affection was also perhaps for all the Civil War dead. Each city tried to outdo the previous city in terms of floral displays, ornate funeral carriages, and beautiful horses. The train’s route closely followed the trip Lincoln had taken in 1861 on his way to assuming the presidency.
